Venezuela holds presidential elections to select a new leader for the country.
The opposition primary elections to attempt to find a Chavez contender took place on February 2012. After these primaries, Chavez's strongest opponent is the center-right candidate, Miranda state governor, Henrique Capriles.
Parliamentary elections last year showed Venezuelan voters evenly divided between support for Mr Chavez's socialists and the opposition.
In 2009, Chavez created enough support to lift the two-term limit of a president, and allowing him to run indefinite. According to the latest polls, Chavez has more than 46% support compared with 34% for opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.
