Vasaloppet (meaning in Swedish "The Vasa race") is an annual long distance (90 km) cross-country ski race organized in NW Dalarna, Sweden.
The race took its name after Gustav Ericsson Vasa, who escaped from the troops of Christian II, king of Denmark, Sweden and Norway in 1520, having the support of Swedish nobility. Besides, Vasa was crowned king of Sweden on June 6, 1523, and was named Gustav I of Sweden.
