In 1987, The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed that June 26 would be the International Day against Drug Abuse and Drug Trafficking. This was in keeping with the UN's call for a world free of illegal drugs. Each year, worldwide events are held in an attempt to draw urgent attention to the need to stop drug abuse and drug trafficking.
