Held annually before Lent, the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the world’s most famous festival. Every year, two million local visitors and 500,000 foreigners attend the festival, making it the festival with the highest attendance rate in the world.
Flamboyant displays are organized thanks to the joint efforts of organized clusters of locals, otherwise known as samba schools, who spend a great deal of time in putting on a spectacular show.
Samba schools working on floats include the Uniao de Sonhadores, Mocidade Independente, Academicos do Salgueiro, Unidos da Tijuca, Imperio Serrano, and Beija-Flor de Nilopolis.
The first Rio carnival traces its origin back to 1723.
This year´s carnival runs until February 28.
