The Great Moonbuggy Race is an annual competition organized by NASA. College and high school students compete against each other in their own designed vehicles on a half-mile track that imitates the surface of the moon.

The race course includes rocks, craters, lava ridges, slopes and a surface resembling the one of the moon.

The Moonbuggies have to be human powered and should carry two students of the six member team. The fastest vehicle of both the college and high school division wins the competition.

A prize is also awarded to the team with the best Moonbuggy technical design.
