Anniversary of Pim Fortuyn assassination

Rightwing politician Pim Fortuyn was assassinated by a left radical environmental activist on a parking lot at the Media Park in Hilversum on May 6, 2002. 

Fortuyn participated with his own founded party ‘Lijst Pim Fortuyn’ for the parliamentary elections which was to be held a week later. 

'Lijst Pim Fortuyn' was deemed favorite at the mid-term polls to become the biggest party, making Fortuyn a likely candidate to become prime minister. 

Fortuyn caught the public eye for his outspoken opinions on topics like immigration, asylum and his view on Islam in Dutch society. 

Fortuyn was assassinated during the 2002 Dutch national election campaign.
