The US gives Afghanistan $600 million for combating drugs.

Afghanistan, and particularly the province Herat, is one of the main drug smuggling routes in the world due to its strategic location. From Herat, drugs are carried through to Central Asia, Iran, Russia and Europe.

The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs has stressed the importance of the fight against drugs and decent law enforcement in Afghanistan.

The office argues that drugs trafficking is an international phenomenon which should be tackled in cooperation with other nations.
