The brother of current Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Abdul Quayum Karzai, runs for the Afghan Presidency at the country's presidential elections.

Quayum is an important member of the influential Karzai family. According to his other brother, Mehmood Karzai, he is the best alternative to lead Afghanistan after 2014, when the elections are likely to take place.

It is uncertain whether Hamid Karzai would support Quayum. According to Mehmood, a presidential candidate needs the support of the entire country.

Quayum is a former member of the Woleshi Jirga, which is the lower house of Afghanistan's Parliament. Rumours say that his resignation was caused by a political conspiracy against the Karzai family.

The Karzai family has faced internal struggles and has lost popularity among Afghans due to their involvement in the Kabul Bank crisis and the construction of a Kandahar township with funds from the Ministry of Defense.
