Saudi Arabia modernizes the road and underground transport system of Mecca, the holiest Islamic city, home to approximately 2 million people and tourist destination to more than 6 million Muslim pilgrims from around the globe.

Four metro lines of a total length of 182 km and 88 stations will be added to the 18 km long current metro system. The construction will take almost 10 years to complete and will cost 62 billion riyal (=$16.5 billion).

In the meantime, the city of Mecca plans to renovate the areas around the Grand Mosque and build new roads and foot bridges to facilitate pilgrims during their stay.
