Prague is set to build a monument for Jan Palach, a Czech student who immolated himself in January 1969 in protest of the passiveness dominating Czechoslovak society in the aftermath of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of the country.
The monument will comprise two six-meter high statues, a white figure of the son as a torchbearer and a dark figure of his suffering mother.
It will be situated at Alešovo Nábreží, the Vltava embankment near the centre of the city, which already bears Palach's name.
The project was created by late US sculptor John Hejduk, who presented it to Czechoslovakia in 1991.
