A European peace corps, consisting of 10,000 volunteers, embarks on worldwide humanitarian operations, following the announcement of its launch in September 2012.
"EU Aid Volunteers will demonstrate our European solidarity by helping those most in need," said Kristalina Georgieva, the commissioner for humanitarian aid, when announcing the launch of the humanitarian body. "They will at the same time learn invaluable skills. Saving lives is a life-changing experience that they will never forget, " she added.
The volunteers will be deployed during the 2014-2020 EU budget period. The scheme, which is widely supported despite the economic crisis, will be organized in cooperation with recognized humanitarian organizations.
