Virgin Trains continues operating West Coast lines after the Department for Transport requested the company to keep running on a temporary basis.
Earlier, the department awarded West Coast mainline franchise to First Group, however, the contract was later cancelled “following the discovery of significant technical flaws in the way the franchise process was conducted”.
Virgin Trains, which had previously provided the service was thus requested to continue its operations until a new deal is sealed.
“I believe Virgin remaining as operator for a short period of time is the best way to do this and my officials and I will be working flat out to make this happen,” UK Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin commented about the current situation.
