Bouazizi Memorial Portrait
It is the anniversary of the self-immolation of the Tunisian street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi, an act which became the catalyst for the Tunisian Revolution.
Bouazizi set himself alight in protest after a local policewoman confiscated his vegetable cart and the goods inside it.
Despite paying his fine, he was slapped by the officer and was dismissed when he went to complain at the provincial headquarters. Later, he went back to the building and set himself on fire.
The event sparked outrage at the overarching injustice of the Tunisian government and lead to the first middle eastern revolution in 2010, which later became known as the Arab Spring.
Mohamed Bouazizi died in hospital on January 4, 2011.
