Model of the Bushehr reactor

Iran's first nuclear power plant near the town of Bushehr is activated.

The Bushehr reactor is not considered a serious proliferation threat by nuclear experts, as they are mostly concerned about the sites where Iran enriches nuclear fuel.

Nevertheless, the US has been urging Russia to halt the project for years out of fear that the nuclear plant could help the Iranian government in developing nuclear weapons.

The construction of the Bushehr plant started by Siemens before the Islamic Revolution in 1979, after which it was taken over by Russia's company NIAEP.

According to Iran, the 1,000-megawatt plant will become operational with the maximum power generation capacity. The country plans to build a second reactor at Bushehr between 2013-2014.

Iran claims that its nuclear ambitions are completely peaceful, but Western countries fear that the country plans to develop nuclear weapons. Sanctions on the country have so far not stopped the Iranians from continuing the nuclear project.
