The new Commander of US Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A), Marine General Joseph F. Dunford, takes charge.

Dunford is the successor of Marine General John R. Allen, who is currently involved in an investigation into his relation with Jill Kelley.

Kelley befriended several generals and admirals at the US Central Command headquarters in Tampa and is part of a separate investigation into an affair between former CIA director David H. Petraeus and his biographer Paula Broadwell.

The findings around Allen have not forced the Pentagon to accelerate its initial plan for Dunford to assume command.

Dunford, a former assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, will be the fifth commander of war in Afghanistan under President Barack Obama.
