The Rabbi Martin Katzenstein Award was established in 1979 by the Harvard Divinity School Alumni/ae Association in order to honor graduates who exhibit "a passionate and helpful interest in the lives of other people, an informed and realistic faithfulness, an embodiment of the idea that love is not so much a way of feeling as a way of acting, and a reliable sense of humor".

The Award honors Martin Katzenstein who died in 1970 while he was the School’s acting dean of students.
