Japan is to amend its National Defense Program Guidelines in a bid to enhance the country's defensive capabilities.
The announcement was made by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at a ceremony organized by the country's Defense Ministry to honor the return of Japan's Self-Defense Forces from their UN peacekeeping mission in the Golan Heights. The country is also due to initiate a midterm defense program, the Japanese premier told participants at the event.
The measure brought forth by the new administration was aimed at
Japan's defense budget for the first time in eleven years.
Japan has been working towards strengthening its military capacity and in particular the country's position in the row with China over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands in East China Sea.
