A United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) convenes, continuing the previous discussions at a UN conference in July 2012.
According to the UN, the global trade in all kinds of conventional weapons remains "poorly regulated". The aim of the new treaty is to ensure that there is adequate government policing of the international trade in weapons, so that arms are disposed of responsibly, and do not fall into the wrong hands.
The negotiations leading to an international Arms Trade Treaty began with a proposal in General Assembly resolution 61/89, in 2006.
