Bishop of Liverpool retires at 65

The Bishop of Liverpool The Right Reverend James Jones is to retire on his 65th birthday.

The Bishop is mostly known for leading the Hillsborough Independent Panel to uncover the truth about the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, the human crush occurred during the Liverpool and Nottingham Forest football teams that killed 96 people and injured 766 others.

He is said to take the step to allow his successor, Bishop of Warrington, The Rt Rev Richard Blackburn, the opportunity to form a new leadership team.

A farewell service is planned for the Bishop at Liverpool Cathedral on July 3.
