Asteroid 2012 DA14 skirts earth

Asteroid

The asteroid 2012 DA14, about half the size of a football field (45 metres wide), sweeps past earth at close range (about 34,100 km).  However, NASA says there is no danger of collision.

Asteroids the size of 2012 DA14 fly by every 40 years or so, but never before has an asteroid been observed to fly past the earth at such close range.

Astronomers estimate that a large-size asteroid will hit the earth every 1,200 years, creating a large crater.
