Japanese PM Shinzo Abe discusses with representatives of the local government the possibility of relocating a key US marine base on his one-day visit to the Okinawa Prefecture.

The Japanese government has pushed for the relocation of the Futenma base, which is now located in a crowded residential district in Ginowan in Okinawa. Its plan offers a coastal area in the prefecture’s Henoko as an alternative location for the base.

Local residents oppose the plans and insist they would prefer the base to be moved out of Okinawa altogether. The issue has strained relations between US and Japan.
