Australia's parliament is dissolved, ahead of the September 7  general elections

The poll date was announced by new Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd early August, six weeks after he defeated his predecessor Julia Gillard in a Labor party vote.

"It's on. A few moments ago I saw the governor-general and asked that she dissolve this parliament and call the federal election for 7 September," said Rudd on August 4. - Australian PM Kevin Rudd calls election for 7 September on 2013-08-05
