Russia revives Volgograd's wartime name, Stalingrad, for ceremonial purposes six days a year. May 9, when Russia celebrates the victory over Nazi Germany and commemorates the fallen soldiers, is one of them.

On the Victory Day, the German military surrendered to the Soviet Union and the Allies of World War II in Berlin.

The country's lawmakers approved the name change on January 31, just ahead the 70th anniversary of Red Army's defeat of Nazi forces at Stalingrad in World War II.

"Deputies have taken a decision to establish the name 'hero-city Stalingrad' as a symbol of Volgograd. We will be able to use this symbol officially in our speeches and reports and at mass events," said lawmaker Sergei Zabednov. - Russia revives Stalingrad city name, six days a year on 2013-01-31
