The 15-year-old Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai may be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize following her nomination for the honor on February 1.

Malala was shot in the head on October 9, 2012, by a Taliban gunman for campaigning for girls' education and promoting her allegedly 'secularist' views online.

She has since the incident become an internationally recognized symbol of resistance to religious extremism and the Taliban's drive to deny women education.

"A prize to Malala would not only be timely and fitting with a line of awards to champions of human rights and democracy, but also ... would set both children and education on the peace and conflict agenda," said the head of the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, Kristian Berg Harpviken.
