Myanmar allows UN humanitarian mission into strife-torn Kachin State for the first time

Myanmar allows a UN humanitarian mission to travel into the strife-torn Kachin State in the northern part of the country to deliver humanitarian aid for the first time since the escalation of violence in the region in December 2012.

The Kachin State has been plagued by a civil war that erupted on June 9, 2011 between the Kachin Independence Army and the Burmese army.

The UN Special Human Rights Rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana is due to visit the region in order to assess the impact of the conflict on the Kachin State.
