New Pope chosen before deadline following Benedict XVI's resignation

A new Pope is elected before the term to replace Benedict XVI is set to expire.

The announcement was made by Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi.

The election of a new pope is signaled with white smoke (fumata bianca) through the chimney and announced by the Cardinal Protodeacon, the senior Cardinal Deacon using the Latin phrase Habemus Papam! (We Have a Pope!). - New Pope expected by end of March on 2013-02-11
