Venezuelan Pemon Indians from the village of Uriman release a group of approximately 40 soldiers being held captive since last week.

The villagers captured the soldiers after allegedly suffering mistreatment and abuse. The military men are claimed to have routinely stopped members of the Pemon community in search of gold.

The decision to release the soldiers came after representatives of the Pemon Indians reached an agreement with government representatives and military officers. The Venezuelan government has also announced it will allow Indians to mine for gold.
