The US Senate holds a confirmation vote on the appointment of Chuck Hagel as the country's next Secretary of Defense. The vote of full Senate comes after its Armed Services Committee approved the nomination on February 12.

The vote was originally supposed to be held on February 14 but the Republicans demanded more time to weigh outstanding questions about Hagel.

The Republicans have questioned, among other issues, whether the decorated Vietnam veteran would be sufficiently supportive of Israel and tough enough on Iran as Pentagon chief. - Senate panel approves Chuck Hagel defence nomination on 2013-02-12 - Republicans delay Chuck Hagel's defence secretary vote on 2013-02-14
