The US Supreme Court is scheduled to hear
arguments in the California case, Hollingsworth v. Perry, about whether the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment prohibits the state from defining marriage as a union of a man and a woman.
The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals avoided Proposition 8, the prohibition on same-sex marriage in the state of California, but on narrow grounds. They claimed the state could not take away a right to same-sex marriage that it had previously allowed.
Nine US states have legalised same-sex marriage.
