The Bulgarian government is set to resign following a week of violent protests, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said in a surprise announcement to Parliament.

"The people gave us power and today we are returning it," he said.

The mass protests, the biggest in 16 years, were triggered by electricity price increases and corruption scandals.

Borisov citied beatings of protesters by the police on February 19 as one reason for his decision.

He also said he would not participate in an interim government.
