Democrat Cory Booker challenges Republican rival Steve Lonegan in the New Jersey special election for US Senate.

The special election for New Jersey senator was called after the death of Democrat Senator Frank Lautenberg.

The state's Governor Chris Christie made the announcement on June 4. The highly unusual special election, which is expected to cost the state $24 million, follows a complicated schedule in which voters go to the polls on a Wednesday to cast ballots for a new senator but will return three weeks later for the regularly scheduled general election to vote for a governor. - Christie Decides on October Vote for New Senator on 2013-06-05
